Dr. Bruce Matichuk
(CTO; Co-Founder; Salu Design Group)
Bruce Matichuk received his BSc. (1986) and M.Sc. (2007) in Computer Science from the University of Alberta - he justify the Ph.D. program in 2010 to pursue entrepreneurial activities. His first company, Celcorp, built an Intelligent Agent based integration system for which several patents were awarded. The application was successfully installed at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, Holiday Inn, American Airlines and many other fortune 500 companies. Bruce left Celcorp to help start Poynt, a well-known intelligent system platform for locating services, and CliniTrust, a high security email platform for doctors. Bruce then worked as a lecturer in the JR Shaw School of Business teaching technology strategy for several years before leaving to launch another AI tech start-up in Silicon Valley. Currently his new start-up, Salu Design Group Inc. (Health Gauge), is focused on the application of Neural Nets to measure Blood Pressure and a non-invasive means of reading glucose. Bruce is working with another start-up, Aidant Intelligent Technology, developing a face and behavior identification system with intelligent event processing. Bruce also writes for Troy Media and presents on the emergence of AI and its impacts on business and society.
Dr. Wilson Howe

The president of Symroc, Wilson Howe, is a highly skilled engineering, project management and business management professional with track record of success in developing and improving projects for industrial operations. He is a results-oriented team leader with strategic vision, strong planning skills, execution insights, and people management capability. Dr. Soroush Karimzadeh
(CEO ;Novarc Technologies Inc.)
Soroush is the CEO and co-founder at Novarc Technologies. Previously, he was a project manager at Autopro Automation, managing industrial automation projects for oil and gas and mining companies. Prior to this, he was a project engineer at Kruger Products, designing, developing and implementing automated systems for paper machines and converting lines. Before Kruger, Soroush founded and lead a startup technology company creating a novel SaaS CRM platform and also helped as development associate for a National Investment Banking Conference. Soroush holds an MBA in Strategy and Finance from University of British Columbia and has passed all three levels of the CFA program. He holds a Master of Applied Science in electrical engineering from University of British Columbia and a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Sharif University of Technology."
Dr. Matt Eskandar

Matt Eskandar, P.Eng. graduated from U of A with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1991. Matt is the founder and President of MR Control Systems International Inc. ( www.mrcsi.com ). Matt’s extensive experience in monitoring, control and automation projects in multiple industries worldwide has inspired him to develop a new generation of Monitoring and Control Systems that
goes beyond conventional SCADA Systems. Matt is an active member of IEEE, APEGGA and APEGBC. He presently serves as a Chairman of the Southern Alberta IEEE Control Systems and Instrumentation joint chapters.
Dr. Masoud Kalantari
(Research & Development Manager; NCS Multistage)
Dr. Masoud Kalantari joined NCS Multistage as their Research and Development Manager in 2017. Prior to NCS, Dr. Kalantari served as the Senior Mechanical Engineer for National Oilwell Varco since 2012. Dr. Kalantari earned a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Concordia University. He was affiliated with the Centre for Intelligent Machines at McGill University, and has worked collaboratively on downhole research projects with the University of Calgary, Concordia University, and McGill University. Dr. Kalantari has accumulated an extensive engineering and research background in downhole tools. In addition to his academic and professional experiences, Dr. Kalantari has authored and co-authored more than 20 international journal and conference papers. He also holds numerous inventions and patents in downhole drilling area.

Dr. Georgios B. Giannakis

Georgios B. Giannakis (born February 27, 1958) is a Greek–American Professor, engineer, and inventor. At present he is an Endowed Chair Professor of Wireless Telecommunications with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Director of the Digital Technology Center at the University of Minnesota. Giannakis is internationally known for his work in the areas of statistical signal processing, distributed estimation using sensor networks, wireless communications and cross-layer network designs, on topics such as auto-regressive moving average system identification using higher-order statistics, principal component filter banks, linear precoding, multicarrier modulation, ultra-wideband communications, cognitive radios, and smart grids. Seminal work includes the development of linear precoding wireless communication systems, which provided a unified approach for designing space-time block codes that achieve data high rates and reliability, and proposal of zero-padding as an alternative to the cyclic prefix for multi-carrier communication systems, which had impact in the multi-band ultra wide band standard. Current research focuses on big data and network science with applications to social, brain and power networks with renewables.
Dr. Sidney Fels

Sidney Fels has been in the department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at UBC since 1998. Dr. Fels received his PhD and MSc in computer science at the University of Toronto in 1994 and 1990 respectively and his BASc in electrical engineering at the University of Waterloo in 1988. He was recognized as a Distinguished University Scholar at UBC in 2004. He was a visiting researcher at ATR Media Integration & Communications Research Laboratories in Kyoto, Japan from 1996 to 1997. Dr. Fels previously worked at Virtual Technologies Inc. in Palo Alto, CA. He is internationally known for his work in human-computer interaction, 3D displays, biomechanical modeling, neural networks, intelligent agents, new interfaces for musical expression and interactive arts. His lab website is at hct.ece.ubc.ca. Dr. Fels is also the director of the Media and Graphics Interdisciplinary Centre (MAGIC) at UBC (www.magic.ubc.ca).
Dr. Nicolas A. F. Jaeger

Nicolas A. F. Jaeger is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Since his appointment in 1989, his work has included the development of optical sensors to measure primary voltage and current in power transmission and distribution systems, the development of optical sensors to monitor the health of installed power equipment, the development of ultrahigh-speed, integrated-optic modulators in compound semiconductors and the special electrodes used in them, and the development of photonic integrated components and circuits on silicon-on-insulator platforms. To date, his research has resulted in two spin-off companies. He currently offers a nationwide graduate course in silicon photonics with colleagues at UBC, Université Laval, and CMC Microsystems. For research and technology transfer, Professor Jaeger has received the Canadian Institute of Energy’s Research and Development Award, the BC Advanced Systems Institute’s Technology Partnership Award, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Conference Board of Canada’s Synergy Award for Innovation, the Canadian Association of Physicists and the National Optics Institute’s Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Applied Photonics, and the British Columbia Technology Industries Association’s Excellence in Technical Innovation Award. For teaching and mentoring, Professor Jaeger has received the Killam Teaching Prize and the Killam Award for Excellence in Graduate Mentoring.
Dr. Vincent Wong

Vincent Wong is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. His research areas include protocol design, optimization, and resource management of communication networks, with applications to the Internet, wireless networks, smart grid, fog computing, and Internet of Things. Dr. Wong is an Editor of IEEE Transactions on Communications and an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. He has served as a guest editor of IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications and IEEE Wireless Communications. Dr. Wong is a Fellow of the IEEE.
Dr. Shen-En, Qian
(Canadian Space Agency)
S.-E. Qian is a world renowned scientist with 30 years' experience in space science and technology. He is currently a top scientist with the Canadian Space Agency, where he serves as the Scientific Authority of Canadian government contracts, leads the industry and academia in the development of innovative space technologies and satellite missions. He heads an in-house R&D team in the development of space technologies and spaceborne electro-optical instruments and their applications for Earth observation. He holds 35 patents worldwide and published over 100 scientific papers. He is the sole author of 2 books on optical satellites and their signal processing published by SPIE Press and a co-author of 4 others. He led around 200 experts at national space agencies and edited a must-have handbook "Optical Payloads for Space Missions", published by John Wiley & Sons in 2016. He has made over 20 lectures in universities worldwide. He received the Ph.D. degree in telecommunication and electronic systems in 1990. He is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the SPIE, and a Senior Member of IEEE.
Dr. Behraad Bahreyni
(Simon Fraser University)
Behraad Bahreyni is an Associate Professor and the founding Director of the Intelligent Sensing Laboratory (ISL) at the School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering at Simon Fraser University, BC, Canada. He received his BSc in electronics engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Iran, and MSc andPh.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Manitoba, Canada, in 1999, 2001, and 2006, respectively. He was a post-doctoral researcher with the NanoSicence Centre at Cambridge University, UK, where he conducted research on interface circuit design for microresonators. He joined Simon Fraser University in 2008 after a one-year tenure in the industry as a MEMS design engineer. Over the past decade, his research activities have focused on the design and fabrication sensing systems comprising micro/nano sensors from silicon, polymers, or nanocomposites, their interface electronics, and the required signal processing algorithms. Dr. Bahreyni is the author of more than 100 technical publications including a book on the fabrication and design of resonant microdevices.
