Mike Mabey is a founder and Chief Technology Officer at QuirkLogic™, where he oversees creative innovation and all technical aspects of getting great products in the hands of customers. He has a 20-year history of successfully leading challenging, large-scale technology endeavors, and in partnership with Nashir Samanani has launched over half a dozen globally used products. Mike co-founded Elluminate, where he was responsible for the company’s technology vision and implementation from inception to acquisition. He built and led teams that created the award-winning Elluminate Live! real-time collaboration software, including a proprietary Collaborative Communication Framework, virtual room management systems, and integration with key enterprise systems. As a result of Elluminate’s acqusition, Mike became Vice President and CTO for the Collaborate division of Blackboard, a global edtech market leader. He oversaw product development and global hosting for a suite of business-critical cloud services that saw double-digit growth and usage in over 175 countries. Mike was also co-founder and CTO of EraSoft Technologies, which was acquired by ViaSoft. There his product line quickly became the industry leader in its class—growing from concept to over 70% of the global market share in under 36 months. Mike’s teams’ products at Viasoft won numerous awards, including the coveted Windows Winlist and PC World’s Best Buy.
Bruce Matichuk received his BSc. (1986) and M.Sc. (2007) in Computer Science from the University of Alberta - he left the Ph.D. program in 2010 to pursue entrepreneurial activities. His first company, Celcorp, built an Intelligent Agent based integration system for which several patents were awarded. The application was successfully installed at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, Holiday Inn, American Airlines and many other fortune 500 companies. Bruce left Celcorp to help start Poynt, a well-known intelligent system platform for locating services, and CliniTrust, a high security email platform for doctors. Bruce then worked as a lecturer in the JR Shaw School of Business teaching technology strategy for several years before leaving to launch another AI tech start-up in Silicon Valley. Currently his new start-up, Salu Design Group Inc. (Health Gauge), is focused on the application of Neural Nets to measure Blood Pressure and a non-invasive means of reading glucose. Bruce is working with another start-up, Aidant Intelligent Technology, developing a face and behavior identification system with intelligent event processing. Bruce also writes for Troy Media and presents on the emergence of AI and its impacts on business and society.
Laine Hotte joined Trakopolis in November 2014. As Chief Technology Officer, he is responsible for leading the Trakopolis research and development team, where he examines the short and long-term needs of the organization, utilizing his teams to help Trakopolis reach its objectives, as well as driving cross-company engineering initiatives and collaboration. Prior to joining Trakopolis, he worked as a software architecture consultant for the American Heart Association technology department from May 2008 to October 2014, where he provided enterprise level architectural design, team leadership and development. Mr. Hotte holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computing Science from the University of Alberta.
The president of Symroc, Wilson Howe, is a highly skilled engineering, project management and business management professional with track record of success in developing and improving projects for industrial operations. He is a results-oriented team leader with strategic vision, strong planning skills, execution insights, and people management capability. Wilson has much experience and skills in Project Management, Design Engineering, Project Execution, Economics Evaluation, Program and Portfolio Management, Industrial Plant Operations, Work Process Design and Optimization, Project Organization Structure and Governance, Benchmarking and Assessment, Asset Management, Operational Excellence Systems and Implementation, and Business Management in petroleum and related industrial operations.
Soroush Karimzadeh is the CEO and co-founder of Novarc Technologies. Previously, he was a project manager at Autopro Automation, managing industrial automation projects for oil and gas and mining companies. Prior to this, he was a project engineer at Kruger Products, designing, developing and implementing automated systems for paper machines and converting lines. Before Kruger, Soroush founded and lead a startup technology company creating a novel SaaS CRM platform and also helped as a development associate for a National Investment Banking Conference. Soroush holds an MBA in Strategy and Finance from University of British Columbia and has passed all three levels of the CFA program. He holds a Master of Applied Science in electrical engineering from University of British Columbia and a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Sharif University of Technology.
Matt Eskandar, P.Eng. graduated from U of A with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1991. Matt is the founder and President of MR Control Systems International Inc. (www.mrcsi.com). Matt’s extensive experience in monitoring, control and automation projects in multiple industries worldwide has inspired him to develop a new generation of Monitoring and Control Systems that goes beyond conventional SCADA Systems. Matt is an active member of IEEE, APEGGA and APEGBC. He presently serves as a Chairman of the Southern Alberta IEEE Control Systems and Instrumentation joint chapters.
Masoud Kalantari joined NCS Multistage as their Research and Development Manager in 2017. Prior to NCS, Dr. Kalantari served as the Senior Mechanical Engineer for National Oilwell Varco since 2012. Dr. Kalantari earned a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Concordia University. He was affiliated with the Centre for Intelligent Machines at McGill University, and has worked collaboratively on downhole research projects with the University of Calgary, Concordia University, and McGill University. Dr. Kalantari has accumulated an extensive engineering and research background in downhole tools. In addition to his academic and professional experiences, Dr. Kalantari has authored and co-authored more than 20 international journal and conference papers. He also holds numerous inventions and patents in downhole drilling area.
Vincent Wong, is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. His research areas include protocol design, optimization, and resource management of communication networks, with applications to the Internet, wireless networks, smart grid, mobile cloud computing, and Internet of Things. Dr. Wong is an Editor of IEEE Transactions on Communications and an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.
Behraad Bahreyni received his M.Sc. degree from the University of Manitoba,canada in Electrical Engineering in 2001, Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba, Canada in electrical engineering in 2006,and Post-doctorate Degree from Cambridge University in Mechanical Engineering in 2007. He was the senior MEMS Design Engineer in Sand9 and then he joined SFU as Assistant Professor.there he founded the Intelligent Sensors Laboratory.He also played the role of Visiting scholar in NXP Semiconductors.He then promoted to the post of Associate Professor in SFU in Mechatronic system Engineering from 2014 till now.He is also the Founder and CEO of axSense Technologies.His research interests are in the area of Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), Micro- and nano-sensors,Micro- and nano-fabrication technologies, Sensor signal processing etc.He got awarded by Endowed Research Fellowship, SFU, 2008, The Douglas R. Colton Medal for Research Excellence, 2007, Micralyne Microsystem Design Award, 2005 ,Edward R. Toporeck Graduate Fellowship in Engineering, in 2003.He is the senior member of IEEE and the Member of ASME, SAE, APEGBC also.
